Stanza 4: Political Powerhouse

This Stanza is written to center on the critical issues of politics observed in the current legislative system of our nation. The following reflection is to allow a platform of discussion and to provide an equal opportunity for the “Stanza” community to spread their thoughts with the greater good of humanity. Due to the recent midterm elections, I have witnessed and heard the chants of hope and tears of worry towards our current administration and local leaders.

Politics create a sense of divide within our nation. Displayed through power and policies, elected officials have a tremendous role in shaping our laws and rights as citizens. The irony of power and democracy coincide to form a “complete” institution, riddled with biased policies and the formation of a rigid government.

Contrary, our government serves a purpose. A purpose to represent each individual and uphold justice. So, why do the current laws not fully reflect the rights of all humans? Our nation has witnessed 45 men alter the course of our country for the better or worse. Many decisions have brought joy; others led to suffering. The United States of America continues to be a place of honor and freedom.

There are a few flaws within our system. At times, several elected members are solely focused on the betterment of their personal lives. Therefore, these members focus on the minute details and pleasures of their life over the betterment of our nation. These current politicians have served a majority of their lives on an elected-ballot position. The political terms, engrained in the Constitutional bylaws, allow politicians to continue to be elected year-after-year. It sometimes feels like these members serve a lifetime in local, state, or national offices. While some voters would say that stability provides security and confidence in upholding certain laws, others might contradict politicians who are continuously elected.

Another issue is the legacy of politicians. It seems apparent that most politicians only serve for half of their term and then shift focus on campaigning for the rest of their elected term in order for re-election.

These flaws lead to a continuous cycle. The formation of a political powerhouse.
