The arrival of a new year often inspires a sense of renewal—a chance to reflect on the past and set intentions for the future. As a medical student and a blogger, this season is not only an opportunity to fine-tune my personal and academic goals but also a moment to reassess the purpose of my writing and the impact it has on others.
Here’s how I’m approaching my 2025 New Year’s resolutions this year, balancing the demands of medical school with my passion for storytelling.
1. Prioritize Wellness: A Non-Negotiable Foundation
Medical school can feel like a whirlwind of deadlines, exams, and endless study sessions. While it’s tempting to sacrifice self-care in the pursuit of academic excellence, I’ve realized that wellness is not optional—it’s essential.
This year, I’m committing to:
- Establishing a consistent sleep routine (yes, even during exam weeks!). Planning to get 7.5 hours each night!
- Incorporating daily movement, whether it’s a brisk morning walk or going to the gym 3 times a week.
- Practicing mindfulness to stay grounded amidst the chaos.
As a blogger, I also hope to share my wellness journey with my readers, offering tips and reflections on how to cultivate balance in a demanding environment.
2. Embrace the Power of Saying ‘No’
Medical school is full of opportunities—research projects, student organizations, networking events. While it’s exciting to be involved, overcommitting can lead to burnout.
This year, I’m learning to say “no” to tasks that don’t align with my goals or values. By doing less, I hope to do better, focusing on quality over quantity.
As a blogger, I aim to write more intentionally, creating content that resonates deeply with my values and goals. I plan to post at least once per month and grow my audience this year.
3. Strengthen Connections with Patients
One of the greatest privileges of medical school is the opportunity to interact with patients. As I will be moving to Colorado Springs in July to start clinical rotations, these future patient encounters remind me why I chose this path in the first place.
This year, I’m resolving to:
- Listen more attentively during patient interactions.
- Approach every patient with empathy, even in challenging situations.
- Reflect on these experiences and weave them into my writing to inspire and educate others.
4. Stay Curious and Keep Learning
Medical school is a lifelong journey of learning, but curiosity often gets overshadowed by the pressure to perform. This year, I’m determined to rekindle my sense of wonder:
- Delving into topics beyond the syllabus, like the intersection of medicine and technology. I plan to focus on nutrition and share personal stories with food as a pescatarian for the past 7 years. I will continue to broaden my culinary palate.
- Reading 10 books this year!
Through my blog, I plan to document this journey, sharing resources and insights to inspire fellow students to stay curious too.
5. Expand My Blogging Horizons
Finally, as a blogger, I want to push the boundaries of my writing. This year, my resolutions include:
- Collaborating with other medical students and professionals to diversify perspectives.
- Experimenting with new formats, such as reigniting my podcast, Stanzas of Life “SOL”
- Engaging more actively with my readers through comments, social media, etc.
By expanding my reach, I hope to create a community where we can all learn, grow, and support each other.
A Year of Growth
2025 New Year’s resolutions are more than just lofty goals—they’re a commitment to continuous growth. As I step into this new year, I carry the lessons of the past and the hope of the future, both as a medical student and a blogger.
To my fellow medical students, bloggers, and readers: let’s embrace this journey together. Let’s hold each other accountable, celebrate our victories, and support one another through the inevitable setbacks.
Here’s to a year of progress, purpose, and passion. Happy New Year!
