Stanza 16, Part 1: Unexpected Uncertainty

“It feels unnatural to not be in motion.”

The vacant streets of Detroit, empty stadiums, ballparks, and storefronts are not signs of retreat but of resolve.

“We are not sitting out the fight, rather we are winning it.”

Social distancing is slowly proving to be an effective measure against our viral enemy: Covid-19. Though isolation can be limiting and dull, it prevents the spread of this contagious disease by reducing the number of times people come into close contact with one another. We need to remain patient and vigilant during this time.

With over 315 million people in at least 42 states, 3 counties, 9 cities, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico (The New York Times) being urged to stay home, economic and political hardships are rampant. To try and combat the financial worries faced by the American public, President Donald Trump signed into law a historic $2 trillion stimulus package. With the announcement, the President plans to send checks directly to individuals and families, a major expansion of unemployment benefits, and financial assistance for small businesses.

Times of uncertainty bring the Smörgåsbord of hors d’oeuvres: fear, anxiety, and isolation are brought to the center of our thoughts and actions. With heightened sympathetic activation, we are alerted to remain on-edge and cautious of our surrounding environment.

Yet, the antidote to fear is hope.

During this time of isolation, it is essential to stay virtually connected with family, friends, and neighbors. We are called to take this time as a sign of togetherness, as we take care of ourselves and loved ones. It is only a matter of time until we return to normal.

Be hopeful and continue to spread joy and happiness throughout your community! Write letters, send handmade cards, email relatives, dance with family members, and share stories. We all long to feel connected to one another and loved.

We are living in an unprecedented time of unexpected uncertainty.

“We don’t stop in the name of fear. We stop in the name of love” (Doner).
